We had a marathon recording session last night. I think we were finally able to record our entire 50 min. set. We went with a very simple setup — three mics straight into the Digi 002 pres (no compression). For the mics we went with a RODE NT1 for guitar 1, RODE NT2 on guitar 2, and a MXL 990 for vocals. It’s amazing how going with a minimalistic setup sounds so much better than when we go all out (DigiMax, Compression, EQ, etc.).

I have posted the entire session here in Windows Media format. I will try to post an MP3 version over the weekend.

Finally installed Ceilume ceiling tile.

April 10th, 2007

The Ceilume ceiling tile from Empire West came in about three weeks ago…but with little time to spare, the new tile sat in my basement waiting to be installed. I was finally able to put in a few hours this past weekend and I must say I am extremely pleased with results.

Installation was a snap. The majority of the grid was 2″ x 2″ so I was able to drop them into the existing grid space without modification. The edge trim required a little more effort because I needed to trim them down to fit the smaller spaces. I ended up cutting the edge trim to using a pair of scissors. I also choose to place the existing fiberglass tiles on top of the new panels to reduce any reverberation that might occur once we get the entire band back in the studio.

All in all I am very pleased with how this project turned out. I would recommend Ceilume to others looking for an alternative to traditional suspended ceiling tiles. They are probably not the best choice for studio applications due to their thin plastic profile but I decided to try them anyway.

A new song and an old song.

April 6th, 2007

Beach has been out of town for the last week or two…so Beck and I decided to get together and work on some unfinished material.

We brought back an old favorite from the Chris Lawson days called “Better Days”. Beck changed it up and I have to say I like it much better than than the way we used to play it. We decided to speed up the tempo and reworked the bridge. I can’t wait to get Beach involved.

Next I “attempted” to learn “Without You”. Beck wrote this ballad about a year ago. It’s weird, I can play it when Beck plays along but take away his guitar and I can’t get through the first verse to save my life. I just realized that I must have been faking it for the last year. Needless to say, I will be working on this one for the next couple of weeks.

Finally, we worked on a new “Yet to be Titled” ditty. Beck put some awesome words to a riff that I have been playing around with the last couple of weeks. It is still a work in progress…but there was progress none the less.
